Love this connection. Such an important thing to reflect on! I have several shifting spaces, but they're each quite intentional, and I like the shifting aspects of them.

Oof, I just want to say thank you for NOT citing Atomic Habits on habit-formation... I was recommended that book a while ago and found it absolutely infuriating and problematic on so many levels! I love this idea of having certain spaces for certain types of tasks, though I think with the way my brain works it's often more helpful for me personally to have a rotation of spaces (usually home, campus, public library, occasionally a cafe) to cycle through depending on my mood and focus levels for the day. (My living situation is also a little small to have much meaningful separation between workspaces)

Hi Erin! I love what you said about the rotation of spaces to cycle through and I bet that folks will resonate with that idea, too. I chuckled about the Atomic Habits comment--I like the concept of *starting with* a cue, routine, reward approach to habits and then adjusting an approach to make it personal, but I think that book (like most productivity books, IMO) is hyped up too much as the godsend for maximizing output and it just doesn't consider that folks might need or want to work differently. Thanks for sharing your comment here!

I have been thinking about spaces in my house so much as I try to cultivate a routine for my creative practice a month into starting a full time office job, post MFA. Last winter break, I wrote half a novel draft lounging on my 3/4 length couch. Now that porch weather is dropping off, I think I might make the couch my dedicated workspace again. I don’t really use it for anything else!

I love a couch for writing! This is excellent. I hope that the transition to inside couch is inspiring (and bravo on your half a novel draft!). I love writing spread out on my kitchen table, too--it's big enough that I can spread out and there's space for the cats to claim a corner for a snooze.
